Compression Therapy and Post-Procedure Care

More Than a Minor Inconvenience

Why Compression Matters

Compression stockings are often seen as a minor inconvenience of vein treatment, but they are one of the most important factors in how well the treatment works and how comfortably the recovery goes.

Graduated compression applies the most pressure at the ankle and gradually less further up the leg, mimicking the action of the calf muscle pump that normally helps push blood back toward the heart. After treatment, that same pressure does extra work: it helps the treated vein hold its seal while it heals, and it supports the surrounding veins that are taking on more of the workload in the meantime. Patients sometimes think of it as a second heart for the leg, doing externally what a damaged valve can no longer do on its own. The difference shows up in how quickly soreness and bruising settle and how completely the treated vein closes over time.

A few things compression does after treatment:

  • Reinforces the seal of the treated vein while it heals
  • Helps the body reabsorb the closed vein over time
  • Reduces soreness, bruising, and skin discoloration
  • Supports circulation in the surrounding veins during recovery

How long compression is worn, and how strictly, depends on which procedure was performed. The next section walks through what to expect.

A Protocol for Every Procedure

The Protocols, and What to Avoid

The length of the compression protocol is one of the more practical differences between vein treatments, and it is worth knowing in advance.

VenaSeal and Asclera sclerotherapy have the shortest protocols: VenaSeal calls for a bandage and stockings for 48 hours and nothing further, while Asclera calls for continuous wear for 48 hours followed by daytime wear for two weeks. RFA and Varithena, which treat larger veins, follow a longer arc: a dressing, wrap, and bolster stay in place untouched for the first 48 hours, stockings are then worn day and night for two weeks, and daytime compression continues for about six months for the best long-term result. Walking is encouraged from the first day after any of these procedures, since calf movement is what activates the pump compression is reinforcing. Air travel and long car rides are fine as long as stockings stay on and a few minutes of walking or ankle movement happen every hour.

For four weeks after RFA, Varithena, or Asclera, heat and direct sun on the treated area are avoided: heat causes vessels to dilate, which works against a vein that is in the process of sealing, and sun can leave lasting discoloration on healing skin. Anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen, naproxen, and aspirin are avoided for the same window, which surprises many patients since it is not about bleeding risk. The body uses a controlled inflammatory response to move a treated vein from sealed to fully reabsorbed, and NSAIDs suppress exactly that response, while acetaminophen does not carry this concern and is the appropriate choice for discomfort. Following these guidelines is also what keeps two uncommon cosmetic effects, matting and staining, to a minimum, and on the rare occasion staining persists, a prescribed bleaching cream helps it resolve.

Clarity Is Part of the Treatment

Dr. Schmetterer's Philosophy of Care

Every instruction on this page comes with a reason, and that is deliberate.

Compression, activity, heat, sun, medication, none of it is arbitrary, and patients who understand why an instruction matters are far more likely to follow it. That is the difference between being told to wear a stocking for two weeks and understanding that the stocking is doing the work of a valve that no longer can, or that skipping ibuprofen protects the very process that closes the vein for good. After 34 years explaining vascular disease to patients, Dr. Schmetterer has found that clarity is itself part of the treatment. Patients who follow their protocol as directed consistently have smoother recoveries and fewer of the minor side effects that bother people most.

The result is recovery that fits into real life, whether that means a long day on your feet, a flight to visit family, or an evening out with friends, all without setting back the healing quietly happening beneath the surface. Protecting that balance, healing on the inside while life continues on the outside, is the whole purpose of the protocol.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can't I take ibuprofen after vein treatment?

Anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen, naproxen, and aspirin are avoided because the body uses a controlled inflammatory response to move a treated vein from sealed to fully reabsorbed. NSAIDs suppress that response, which can slow this healing process rather than simply affecting bleeding risk as many patients assume. Acetaminophen does not carry this concern and is the appropriate choice for any discomfort during recovery.

Yes, air travel and long car rides are permitted as long as compression stockings are worn for the duration. A few minutes of walking, calf pumps, or ankle rotations every hour help maintain circulation during periods of prolonged sitting. These simple steps reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis during travel.

It depends on the procedure. VenaSeal requires only 48 hours of compression, Asclera sclerotherapy calls for 48 hours of continuous wear followed by two weeks of daytime wear, and RFA or Varithena follow a longer arc of 48 hours, then two weeks of day-and-night wear, then about six months of daytime wear. The office provides the specific schedule for each patient’s treatment before they leave.

Dr. Schmetterer is professional and kind. Before the procedures I had an appointment with Dr. Schmetterer to explain the course of treatment . When the treatments were completed he met with me to evaluate the procedures and to discuss directions for aftercare. It was very easy to make appointments. I went to another doctor in the area and I won’t return . I didn’t have an appointment with him before or after the procedures ; I met with his P.A. . When he came into the room he didn’t introduce himself or even say Hi . He never asked me how I was feeling and left the room without saying Goodbye.

I can’t say enough good things about Dr. Shmetterer and the entire team. I had 6 varicose veins treated, and going into it I’ll be honest I’m not great with anything involving veins or blood. I was pretty anxious at first. But from start to finish, they made the entire process smooth, comfortable, and way less intimidating than I expected. Dr. Shmetterer was professional, confident, and took the time to explain everything in a way that actually put me at ease. The treatments themselves were handled with precision and care, and the staff was incredibly supportive the whole time. What really stood out was how they made someone like me who normally struggles with this kind of stuff feel completely under control and taken care of. That says a lot. If you’re dealing with varicose veins and even a little hesitant like I was, this is 100% the place to go. Couldn’t recommend them more.
