Venous Disease

Nimbl® Pneumatic Compression Therapy

Persistent Relief, Proven Pressure

What Is the Nimbl Device?

The Nimbl is a home-use pneumatic compression device that helps move fluid and blood out of the legs through gentle, rhythmic pressure.

A soft sleeve fits around the leg and inflates in a graduated sequence, beginning at the foot and moving upward, encouraging circulation in the direction it is meant to flow. Dr. Schmetterer prescribes it for appropriate patients as one piece of a broader venous care plan, never as a treatment that stands entirely on its own. For true lymphedema, the foundation of treatment remains Complete Decongestive Therapy delivered by specialized physical therapists, and Nimbl does not replace that program. Where it earns its place is alongside it, and on its own for patients with venous-related swelling that persists despite compression garments.

A few practical facts make Nimbl easy to plan around:

  • Setting: at home, after delivery and training from Tactile Medical
  • Sensation: gentle, graduated pressure, generally well tolerated
  • Typical protocol: about 60 minutes daily, adjusted to each patient’s condition
  • Coverage: Medicare and other insurers may cover the device when medically necessary
  • Role: used alongside other care, not as a standalone treatment

Patients recovering from a venous procedure with significant baseline swelling, or managing venous ulcers and advanced skin changes, often benefit from this kind of daily support as well. The right fit depends on the overall plan, not the device alone.

Trained at Home, Used with Confidence

How Nimbl Works and What Daily Use Looks Like

Starting Nimbl therapy does not require a clinic visit for training, which removes one of the biggest barriers to consistent use.

Tactile Medical delivers the device directly to the patient’s home and provides hands-on setup and instruction, so the sleeves and pump are understood and comfortable before the first session. The sleeve inflates in cycles, applying pressure that begins at the foot and moves upward, mechanically assisting the return of fluid toward the heart. Most patients use the device while sitting or resting, and the rhythmic pressure does the work without requiring active effort. Sessions become part of the daily routine rather than a separate appointment.

For someone with phlebolymphedema, Nimbl provides extra support between physical therapy sessions, helping maintain the gains that therapy achieves. For someone with chronic venous insufficiency, it offers consistent mechanical support on days when compression garments alone are not enough. After a venous procedure, it can ease residual swelling during recovery. Over time, consistent use is what allows the benefit to build, which is why the device is designed for comfortable daily wear rather than occasional use.

Comfort Built Into the Plan

Dr. Schmetterer's Philosophy of Care

Not every tool in venous care is a procedure, and Nimbl is a reminder of that.

Some patients need a vein closed; others need ongoing, gentle support for circulation that no single procedure can provide on its own. Recognizing which is which is part of building a plan that actually works for daily life, not just on the day of treatment. Dr. Schmetterer prescribes Nimbl when it genuinely adds something, integrated with whatever procedural or therapy-based care a patient is already receiving. It is never offered as a routine add-on.

For the patient, the value shows up in ordinary moments: legs that feel lighter by evening, a smoother transition after a procedure, one more piece of a plan working quietly in the background. That quiet support is often what makes the rest of the plan easier to live with.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Nimbl device the same as lymphedema treatment?

No. Complete Decongestive Therapy, delivered by specialized physical therapists, remains the primary treatment for true lymphedema, and Nimbl does not replace it. Nimbl is most useful for residual swelling that persists despite that therapy, or for patients with venous-related swelling who benefit from consistent mechanical support at home.

No, most patients find it gentle and comfortable. The device applies graduated pressure in a rhythmic sequence while the patient sits or rests, and sessions are typically built into the day rather than requiring a special routine. Dr. Schmetterer adjusts the duration and intensity based on each patient’s condition and comfort.

It can be. Medicare and other insurers may cover pneumatic compression devices when they are medically necessary for venous insufficiency or lymphedema. Coverage is verified as part of the care plan before the device is prescribed, so patients know what to expect.

Dr. Schmetterer is professional and kind. Before the procedures I had an appointment with Dr. Schmetterer to explain the course of treatment . When the treatments were completed he met with me to evaluate the procedures and to discuss directions for aftercare. It was very easy to make appointments. I went to another doctor in the area and I won’t return . I didn’t have an appointment with him before or after the procedures ; I met with his P.A. . When he came into the room he didn’t introduce himself or even say Hi . He never asked me how I was feeling and left the room without saying Goodbye.

I can’t say enough good things about Dr. Shmetterer and the entire team. I had 6 varicose veins treated, and going into it I’ll be honest I’m not great with anything involving veins or blood. I was pretty anxious at first. But from start to finish, they made the entire process smooth, comfortable, and way less intimidating than I expected. Dr. Shmetterer was professional, confident, and took the time to explain everything in a way that actually put me at ease. The treatments themselves were handled with precision and care, and the staff was incredibly supportive the whole time. What really stood out was how they made someone like me who normally struggles with this kind of stuff feel completely under control and taken care of. That says a lot. If you’re dealing with varicose veins and even a little hesitant like I was, this is 100% the place to go. Couldn’t recommend them more.
