Venous Disease

VenaSeal™ Vein Closure

No Heat, No Stitches, Minimal Downtime

What Is VenaSeal?

VenaSeal™ is an FDA-approved treatment for venous insufficiency that closes diseased leg veins with a medical-grade adhesive instead of heat.

Heat-based procedures like radiofrequency ablation require a series of tumescent anesthesia injections along the vein to protect the surrounding tissue, while VenaSeal does not, which makes the visit simpler and, for many patients, more comfortable. It is typically used for larger superficial veins such as the great saphenous, and it is often the right fit when a patient prefers to avoid anesthetic injections or when the vein’s anatomy makes a heat-based approach more complex. The adhesive is delivered through a thin catheter and seals the vein from the inside. Once closed, blood reroutes naturally through healthy neighboring veins, relieving the pressure behind the aching, swelling, and heaviness.

A few practical facts make VenaSeal easy to plan around:

  • Procedure time: typically 45 to 60 minutes, in the Youngstown office
  • Anesthesia: no tumescent injections required, only the initial access point
  • Driving: patients drive themselves home
  • Return to activity: normal daily activities the same day
  • Compression: just 48 hours, far shorter than heat-based treatments

Coverage is typically available through most plans when venous insufficiency is documented, and verified before scheduling. For patients who qualify, VenaSeal offers one of the simplest paths back to normal activity of any vein procedure.

Gentle Closure, Guided by Ultrasound

How VenaSeal Works and What Recovery Looks Like

Like every procedure at this practice, VenaSeal is guided from start to finish by real-time ultrasound in the hands of the two dedicated vascular technicians.

A thin catheter is positioned inside the diseased vein, and small amounts of the medical adhesive are delivered in carefully controlled segments along its length. Gentle external pressure helps the vein walls seal together as the catheter is withdrawn. There is no thermal energy involved, so the procedure moves smoothly and most patients describe it as remarkably uneventful. A light bandage is applied before the patient leaves the office.

A compression bandage and stockings are worn for 48 hours and then removed, with no extended multi-week protocol afterward, a practical difference many patients appreciate compared with heat-based treatments. Walking is encouraged from day one, ideally 30 to 60 minutes daily taken in ten-minute intervals, since calf movement actively supports the healing circulation. Strenuous exercise and heavy lifting wait five to seven days, and warm baths, hot tubs, and saunas are avoided during that time, because heat dilates vessels and works against the closure process. Full guidance is available on the Compression & Post-Procedure Care page.

The Right Tool for the Right Vein

Dr. Schmetterer's Philosophy of Care

VenaSeal and RFA are both effective and durable, and that is precisely why having both matters.

When a practice offers only one closure technology, every patient gets that technology, whether or not it is the best fit. Dr. Schmetterer keeps both available so the recommendation can follow the ultrasound rather than the inventory: the anatomy of the vein, the patient’s comfort preferences, and the clinical picture decide which approach serves best. Some patients are ideal candidates for the adhesive, others do better with thermal closure, and many could do well with either. In those cases, the choice becomes a conversation rather than a default.

After 34 years of treating the circulatory system, that conversation comes with the reasoning behind it, explained plainly, so each patient understands not just what will be done but why it fits their legs and their life in the Valley. That clarity is part of the care itself.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is VenaSeal safe?

Yes. VenaSeal is FDA-approved and has an established safety record across clinical trials and years of widespread medical use, treating venous reflux disease, the progressive condition in which failing valves allow blood to flow backward, by sealing the diseased vein with a medical-grade adhesive. Dr. Schmetterer reviews each patient’s ultrasound mapping to determine whether this non-thermal approach is the right option for their anatomy.

Yes, but only briefly. A compression bandage and stockings are worn immediately after the procedure and removed after 48 hours, with no multi-week compression protocol afterward, unlike heat-based treatments. That short two-day window is one of the practical advantages that makes recovery easier for patients eager to get back to their routines.

Most patients return to normal daily activities the same day and drive themselves home from the Youngstown office. Walking 30 to 60 minutes daily, broken into ten-minute intervals, is encouraged from the start because calf muscle movement supports healthy circulation during healing. Strenuous exercise and heavy lifting are avoided for five to seven days to protect the treated vein.

Dr. Schmetterer is professional and kind. Before the procedures I had an appointment with Dr. Schmetterer to explain the course of treatment . When the treatments were completed he met with me to evaluate the procedures and to discuss directions for aftercare. It was very easy to make appointments. I went to another doctor in the area and I won’t return . I didn’t have an appointment with him before or after the procedures ; I met with his P.A. . When he came into the room he didn’t introduce himself or even say Hi . He never asked me how I was feeling and left the room without saying Goodbye.

I can’t say enough good things about Dr. Shmetterer and the entire team. I had 6 varicose veins treated, and going into it I’ll be honest I’m not great with anything involving veins or blood. I was pretty anxious at first. But from start to finish, they made the entire process smooth, comfortable, and way less intimidating than I expected. Dr. Shmetterer was professional, confident, and took the time to explain everything in a way that actually put me at ease. The treatments themselves were handled with precision and care, and the staff was incredibly supportive the whole time. What really stood out was how they made someone like me who normally struggles with this kind of stuff feel completely under control and taken care of. That says a lot. If you’re dealing with varicose veins and even a little hesitant like I was, this is 100% the place to go. Couldn’t recommend them more.
